This is my fourth and final installment in the natural bedding series which I have written in partnership with Bedrooms and More. At this point I have talked about everything but the latex mattress I have been reviewing. So here’s the big question- sleeping on latex, what does it feel like?
Is Latex Comfortable?
When I started researching natural bedding to outfit my bedroom, I quickly came to the conclusion that I wanted latex. However, I was not sure what sleeping on latex even felt like. I have slept on a latex mattress for about month and can tell you I don’t ever want to sleep on anything else. It is amazingly comfortable. I was guided by Thane, the son of Bedrooms and More’s founder, to go a little firmer instead of softer. Believe me that plush bed felt amazing, but I knew my husband preferred the firmer one. I was a little nervous as a side sleeper that my shoulder would be sore on the slightly firmer core. Instead I have been pleasantly surprised. Thane also explained that I can make the mattress softer by adding extra layers of latex on the top or adding a wool topper. This is the mattress I have.
I think what I like most comfort-wise is that the mattress is totally uniform. No low spots, no spots where the coils creak if you wiggle around. This is due to the unique way the latex cores are made for Bedrooms and More. Latex is baked in molds. Usually the molds lay flat just like a bed ready to be slept on as the latex solidifies. However, the mold can’t be filled perfectly so the firmness of the mattress varies using this method. Bedrooms and More flips the mold up on its side so the latex can be filled right to the top and keep the same amount of surface tension across the entire bed. This is a more complete explanation of how rubber becomes a mattress from the experts!
The beds are one piece, just like the picture below. I can zip the cover off my mattress and it looks just like this! This is sleeping on latex!
What about Memory Foam?
If you are considering a memory foam mattress let me share just a few quick facts. That foam is a petroleum product. It will stink when it arrives and that stink will be the releasing of toxic chemicals. Eventually it won’t smell, but the off gassing period can go on for a long time. We spend one third of our lives on our beds, usually in rooms with little ventilation.
Memory foam also gets very warm while you sleep. If you get hot easily or live in warmer climates, it should be last on your list of materials for a bed, pillow or anything else for that matter.
Should You Be Flipping Your Mattress?
I bought our mattress from Bedrooms and More right after my mom, so I learned a lot from her experiences. Her most recent mattress was only one sided. She could not flip it. Sounds pretty convenient and these days you see mostly no flip mattresses. Think about it, the mattress companies only have to put the top layers on one side of the mattress. This saves them a bundle of money and due to a genius marketing campaign they are charging more than ever for a cheaper product. One more thing – your pillow top innerspring mattress is going to sag in the middle and you can’t even flip it. You’ve effectively cut the lifespan of your mattress in half. Let’s do the math, you’re paying more, buying more often, and the mattress companies are spending less. Who’s winning here?
My latex mattress should last 20-30 years, and I can flip and rotate it to ensure even wearing. 100% natural tree rubber latex will compress about 2% in 30 years. Another win for sleeping on latex!
Who to trust?
As I mentioned before, we spend one third of our lives sleeping. What we are laying on and breathing in during that time matters a lot to our health. I feel confident recommending Bedrooms and More for your healthier mattress and bedding options. As I was walked through the buying process, I saw pictures and learned about where the latex comes from and how it is all made. You can find that same information if you walk into the store or check out the inside story on Bedrooms and More.
If you are looking into latex options, please make sure they are 100% tree rubber. Some products are labeled with latex, but that could mean one of three things: 100% tree rubber latex, synthetic latex (a petroleum product) or some blend of the two. Ask questions, even if you have to write emails or make a phone call. It’s worth it for the real deal! The poor imitation will sag way more than 2% over time! Look at reviews. Feel free to send me a message with your questions! Bedrooms and More also does a non- selling unbiased mattress buying class every Saturday at 9:30AM. There you will learn all about sleeping on latex and other mattress options!
