There has been something I have wanted to address for a while that is full of controversy – can you drink on the keto diet? And if yes, what are your best choices?
Having a social life is something lots of people struggle with when they go keto. Everywhere you turn there are carbs and temptations. But when we are armed with information you can do better- right? Yes you can!
Here’s the facts:
- When you drink alcohol your body stops burning fat. Full stop.
- Many alcoholic drinks are high in carbs especially beer
- Hard liquor can actually deepen ketosis- but #1 still applies, you are not burning fat for fuel, you’re burning the alcohol.
- On keto you can get into trouble quickly drinking. Your tolerance is low and you should take caution if you intend to drink.
Okay so now we know the basics for drinking while keto. Some people will decide to give up drinking period and some of us will not. It really just depends on your goals and how you want to live your life.
… An interesting tid bit I’ve heard from quite a few keto-ers. One or two drinks has caused a whoosh.
What is a whoosh? A whoosh is kind of like a balloon being popped. Only we are talking about fat cells that suddenly tighten up. This is when you see a larger drop on the scale. I suppose this is due to that deepened ketosis mentioned above. But caution keto-ers have reported horrid hangovers from drinking while in keto. If you decide to drink I recommend moderation!
That is why I am excited about a new toy I got in the mail! *happy dance*
Look at this CUTE packaging!
Of all the drinks in the liquor cabinet of life, wine is my siren call. It’s so fun to taste and try different wines and learn all about what goes into it. But now that I am keto I have backed off my wine consumption. I have a glass every couple of weeks and I use a bit for cooking here and there.
I take so much joy from trying new wines, it is not something I want to give up on my keto diet. And if you love wine too- you don’t need to either.
That’s why I am loving my my new zzysh® for preserving my wines. zzysh® is a revolutionary wine and sparkling wine preserving system that keeps a bottle’s natural taste and fizz after it is opened. The unique technology replaces the air in the bottle with a protective atmosphere consisting of the inert gas argon for wine and a combination of argon and carbon dioxide
for sparkling wine. This in combination with the stopper, works to protect the wine from oxidation, ensuring flavor, taste, fizz and color are all retained.

It’s stupid simple to use. You just open your wine, pour out your glass or two. When you’re done drinking you put the stopper on the top of the bottle tightly. Then they have this nifty hand piece that you press into the seal for 3-4 seconds while you hear a zzysh as the controlled atmosphere flows into the bottle. It’s not actually sucking the air out, it’s putting in a protective atmosphere that stops oxidation!
Now it’s fresh for another day down the road! Or if you’re like me, a few weeks down the road!
When I first started keto I pretty much gave up wine. I didn’t want my favorite sparkling wines to go flat when I could only have a glass. Plus I am the only wine drinker here at casa keto so I had no one to share with.
Problem solved! zzysh® is a fun little device you use to keep your wine fresh, even if you just want a taste! My wines last several weeks and taste like they did at first sip! Until I tried it myself I couldn’t really believe how easy and convenient it was to use! It’s the perfect wine accessory for the keto wino, like me 🙂 If you want to give it a try use promo code: getyourzzysh to receive 20% off your zzysh®purchase.
If you are like me and love wine- here are some general nutrition facts so you can indulge without falling off the keto train! Keep in mind a serving of wine is 5 fluid ounces and carbs listed below are net carbs.

I hope this look into drinking wine on keto has been helpful and answered your questions. When in doubt with wine, drink less and assume it’s more carbs. I also love to have wine with my favorite fatty snacks so I don’t get the munchies and turn to carbs!
Cheers,
Heather
P.S. A little scoop of my caramelized onion dip with some sliced meat or veggies? YUM!
