I am excited to present the second in my four part series on healthier bedding; my washable wool duvet review! I received a washable wool duvet from Bedrooms and More and have been surprised how different it is compared to other quilts, duvets and blankets.
Why did I choose to do a wool duvet review? My husband and I didn’t even have wool or duvets on the brain until the wonderful staff at Bedrooms and More educated us about how blankets and quilts affect your sleep. We had always assumed that the nicest option for a duvet was down. I worked in the outdoor industry for many years, and own my fair share of down jackets, vests and sleeping bags and I love them. What I have learned is a down duvet is the wrong way to go. Feathers shed water, and that makes perfect sense as they are from geese that need protection from the elements. However, this property means that moisture from your own body is prevented from escaping from under the duvet and comes back onto you in the night.
Have you ever been cozy in bed when you first fell asleep, but during the night you had to put a foot or leg outside of the covers to cool down a bit? That is actually from being too wet, not too hot. Your sweat is supposed to cool you down but if the water doesn’t get pulled away from your skin you remain hot! Who knew!?
Wool is different; it wicks water away from you. This leaves you dry and able to better regulate your own body temperature at night. Since I have been sleeping under the wool, I have had no temperature issues. I’ve had a down duvet in the past, but I was sleeping under a hand made flannel quilt from my mom. I loved the flannel feel, but it had regular layers of poly fill from the quilt shop. That poly fill has the same problem as the down, since it’s plastic it keeps the wet in. Kind of like sleeping in a garbage bag. Sad but true.
There were a few more aspects of wool that really sold me on this duvet. Wool, like latex, is hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for my husband who has asthma and allergies. Additionally, the cover is 100% cotton which is breathable and provides amazing temperature regulation. The duvet comes in two different weights, a lighter weight duvet and a heavier one depending on the climate and the season. The heavier wool duvet makes sense for us because it doesn’t get too hot in Seattle and we usually sleep with the windows open for fresh air.
