Instant Pot Chicken Wings – Instapot Recipe!

Today I am writing with a HUGE grin on my face. I finally hopped on the Instant Pot Instapot bandwagon over Cyber Monday and I’m having so much fun! I’ve made a few recipes already and then decided to jump in and see what I could do on my own! I’ve taken my baked chicken wings recipe and reduced the 4 hour cook time to less than 30 minutes! I think you will love these Instant Pot Chicken Wings, Plus they are keto friendly!!!

Why Do I Love the Instant Pot?

Have you jumped on board with an Instapot yet? I love it because I’m saving a lot of time and money!

I would say the best thing about it is taking inexpensive cuts of meat that are usually tough instead of tender and being able to make them tender, quickly.

I really can’t afford the finer cuts of beef like steak very often so I have a lot of roasts that I picked up on sale, to cook. I tend to put it off because I either need to pull out the smoker or the crockpot which can be a bit of a pain. I’m going to give it a few months, but I might get rid of the crockpot since the Instapot is also a slowcooker!

Update– I not used my slowcooker except one holiday recipe (Chex Mix) in nearly 2 years!

Now over two years later, my love affair with the Instant Pot continues and I NEVER use my crockpot. I find that the instant pot cooks flavor into the meat, instead of out. If you are looking for more instant pot recipes, I have a whole page of them here. Soups, meats, and sides all in the instant pot. I just love the way it cooks food!

Do you need to buy a separate steamer basket?

The short answer is no, the little metal trivet that comes with your instant pot will work just fine. Just make sure that the chicken is above the water.

The long answer is the silicon steamer basket I bought in 2016 is well worth the 15 bucks. Mine is over three years old, no wear and tear and I use it all the time!

In this case you can make a double bath when you have a steamer basket. One layer on the metal trivet, put the steamer basket on top and another layer of chicken wings in there. This makes sure they cook evenly.

Will this work with frozen chicken wings, or should they thaw first?

Yes! You can use frozen chicken wings for this recipe. I let mine thaw slightly, just a few minutes, so the spices stick to the wings. Just thaw them enough so they are a little wet and the spices coat the chicken wings well.

Otherwise the recipe is exactly the same if the wings are frozen or not!

On to the chicken wings! I made these Instant Pot Chicken wings on kind of a whim. I love wings, but they can take a long time to make. I never fried them  (until I got an air fryer), I prefer mine coated with spices instead.

Pressure cooking the wings does am amazing job at getting the spices into the meat. My long and slow cooking method makes a nice crust of spices, but I could really taste the spice IN the meat, which was awesome! We literally stood at the stove and ate all the wings standing up! They were finger licking good, I kid you not!

The big difference in cooking methods with wings is how tender the meat turns out. I have tired baking low and slow, baking hotter, air frying and of course the Instant Pot. The instant pot produces the most tender results by far. No meat is left on the bone!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 pound chicken wings about 12 wings
  • 4 tbs taco seasoning -  I get all my spices from Gneiss Spice Company
  • 1 1/2 tsp smoked salt

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish mix the spices together
  2. Roll each wing in the spices gently, the spice don't need to cover the whole wing
  3. In your instapot- add 1 cup of water
  4. Add a steamer basket to the bottom of your instapot
  5. Add your wings to the steamer basket. They can touch but should not be on top of each other. Instead I turned my on their ends to fit the 12
  6. Close and lock the lid. Make sure the pot is set to sealing. Hit Manual and set for 10 minutes at high pressure.
  7. When the pot has cooked for 10 minutes at high pressure, carefully with a pan holder or some hand protection vent the pot.
  8. Once the pot has come back to regular pressure open the lid and remove the wings to a baking sheet. Broil wings for 10 minutes for crispy skin.
  9. Enjoy!

Hi Debbie- I used this one in my instant pot. http://amzn.to/2igSLB1 but you could also use the trivet that came with your instant pot. Just try and make sure the chicken wings don’t fall into the water. My trivet was a little too wide in places, but I have done it that way and it worked!

Yes it will work! I would increase the cooking time by about 5 minutes, but I am just estimating!

I would imagine that by the time the pot comes to pressure the wings will already be defrosted and therefore won’t need any extra time. It will take longer for the pot to come to pressure with frozen food but the timer count down doesn’t begin until the pot is at pressure

i always marinade my wings overnight often my guests opt out of the dipping sauce as the wings are so moist and flavourful. soy sauce, garlic, fish sauce samble and rice vinegar makes a fantastic asian style wing.

for latin i use cumin, Mexican oregano onion chipotle in adobo sauce and beer. finish with lime

for Mediterranean red wine oregano garlic ground olives

So i’m eating paleo right now, and made the following changes and the wings came out amazing! I used a regular unfolding steamer basket, 1.5 cups of water, and a combination of salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic on the wings! Great crispy wings!
