This is part of an ongoing educational series on essential oils. Today’s topic is all about bergamot essential oil. In later parts of this series I will be talking about essential oils you can ingest, aromatherapy recipes and much more. I recently talked all about Palmarosa Essential Oil and how to use it. I also have a part one of essential oils for skincare. Stay tuned for more!
I had a client that other day that was super bummed out over a recent breakup- perhaps you can relate? I happened to be applying bergamot while we were talking and gave her a drop, when she asked to smell it. She went back to work and she texted me about an hour later, that she felt so much better! At first I though maybe just talking it out had helped her get some of her feelings out. But when she asked to buy a bottle of whatever I had given her, I began my research into bergamot essential oil and emotions.
If you have never heard of bergamot before, it is a citrus fruit similar to an orange. It has a very flowery, citrus smell. I have never has someone tell me they didn’t like the smell, it is one of my favorite essential oils, scent wise! The oil is cold pressed from the rind, which means that the oil is not sour, like the juice is. You may recognize the taste or smell, as it is often used in Earl Gray tea. It’s a bit of a mix of orange and lemon.
When used in aromatherapy, bergamot essential oil is usually categorized as energizing like other citrus essential oils. However bergamot is a bit different, and not just a substitute for lemon oil. Instead- inhale bergamot oil when you are feeling, blue, stressed or overwhelmed. It’s like a hug from a close friend in a bottle. I especially recommend getting out the bergamot oil and using regularly when you are feeling overwhelmed with negative feelings. Hence why my post breakup friend was so attracted to the scent.
Bergamot has many different uses, just like most essential oils. This is one reason to use essential oils- keep your mind, body and spirit healthy- when you use an oil for one thing, you are getting support in multiple different ways.
Bergamot is also an oil known to build confidence, so apply a drop to the back of your neck or wrists when you need a confidence boost. Everyone’s favorite confidence in a bottle, Valor is often out of stock, so I recommend trying bergamot instead. I have shared with friends before job interviews to calm the nerves, and supply some extra confidence! It might not guarantee you get the job, but it will give you a clam demeanor and make you smell great! It’s actually the perfect oil for situations like job interviews at the oil will calm nervous energy while giving you that boost of self confidence.
Bergamot is a great oil to add to you diffuser any time of day. It is relaxing, calming and uplifting all at once. I love to add it to my diffuser at night with other sleepy time oils like lavender, cedarwood or vetiver.
